Local asphalt racing legend, Gil Hearne, was really looking forward to the "Legends" night a few weeks ago at Wall Stadium. Hearne is very much a people-person, who, the first time you talk to him will make you feel as if you have been friends for years. He couldn't wait to talk racing, and share stories with the other drivers to be honored that night, as well as the fans.
Those plans came to an abrupt halt when his son Jason was involved in a dispute with the track, and the decision was made to race elsewhere. Gil, made the decision that family comes first and decided to support his son's racing efforts rather than attend Wall.
The decision bothered Gil since he knew it meant he would be unable to speak with the many fans who were looking forward to his appearance. In fact, he was so bothered he took out an ad in Area Auto Racing News, apologizing and giving his fans a way to either talk with him or get autographs.
The racing gods must have been upset, as well, since thanks to a change in his son's racing schedule, Gil, will finally be getting the respect he deserves. New Egypt Speedway will be holding it's own "Legends' night this Saturday. While many of the drivers being honored are from the dirt side of things, the track will also be honoring several drivers from it's asphalt days.
Gil Hearne became a late addition to Tony Siscone, John Blewett Jr., and Harold Dauncey, as a returning asphalt legend. He will be participating in the meet and greet during intermission, where he will finally get the respect he should have got at the Wall Stadium event.
Funny thing is, for Gil, this isn't all about him. It's just another chance for him to be around the people he truly enjoys. Fellow racers and friends from his era. I'm sure the stories will go on well into the night, and Gil will have a big smile on his face, much like the one he put on his fan's faces for years.
Congratulation to all the legends.
