When Travis Pastrana suffered his injury during X-Games competition, it meant an end to his hopes of racing the Boost Mobile number 99 Toyota at Lucas Oil Raceway in the NASCAR Nationwide race on Saturday. The initial speculation was perhaps Ryan Truex, who had driven the car earlier this year, would step in and attempt to qualify the car.
The Pstrana/Waltrip Race team decided, however, to just pack up and head back home. Their sponsor, Boost Mobile, has agreed to delay the debut of Pastrana.
While this doesn't bust open the door for Ryan Truex to return to the seat of the number 99, it certainly cracks it open a little. The injury of Pastrana will almost certainly prevent him from attempting to race a stock car any time soon, maybe even delaying it until 2012.
Meanwhile, there is a quality race car and race team just sitting on the sidelines. This could give Truex the opportunity, if he can find a sponsor, to make some additional starts in 2011.
While no driver likes to see another suffer an injury, they, also, need to be prepared when an opportunity presents itself. With Pastrana originally scheduled to be in the car, Truex, didn't have a ride to bring a sponsor to. That has all changed now, let's hope the young Jersey driver can take advantage of it.
