New Egypt Speedway Reminds Us Racing is Not Over Yet in Jersey

Yes the kids are back in school, and yes the leaves are changing colors, and there will be a chill in the air this weekend. So does that mean the race season is over in New Jersey? NO! Especially not at New Egypt Speedway, which will present one of it's biggest events of the year on Saturday.
The John Romano Memorial 84-lap Sportsman Event, this Saturday, could very well be one of the best races of the year in not only Jersey, but the Northeast. It will certainly be among the highest paying events to be run featuring Sportsman division cars.
The winner's purse, for this extra, extra long distance event for the Sportsman is $4,000, but it doesn't stop there. There is also a minimum of $15 a lap going to the leader of each lap, and 1-on-1 match races with a prize of $500 provided by Blewett Motorsports. Second place even pays $2,000, more than most of these teams race for weekly. Just taking the green guarantees you $200.
New Egypt has done it's best to not only attract Sportsman teams from other tracks, but to assure that the cars are evenly matched when they take the track. This is certain to be like an all-star event for Sportsman drivers, as the track will not allow Big-Block, or other more experienced drivers to compete.
Joining the Sportsman will be the 600cc Micro Sprints, Tobias SpeedSTRs, and a 100-lap enduro. Adult admission is $20, with children 12-15 $10, and children 11 and under admitted free. Spectator gates open at 3pm, with racing scheduled to begin at 5pm.
So just because the championships have been decided, and the temperatures have dipped, it doesn't mean the racing is over in New Jersey. In fact, if you ask the Sportsman drivers they may say it is just heating up.

Top Ten Reasons to go to Dover This Weekend, Letterman-Style

The post I did several weeks ago of "The Top Ten Reasons to Attend the JBIII Memorial Race at Wall" got such a great response I decided to try it again, this time, however, with Dover. So here are my top ten reasons to go to Dover this weekend. Letterman-style.

10) I will be there on Saturday, roaming the pits, in the media center, in the grandstands, and even getting a tour of the ESPN production facilities. So if you see me wearing my NJ.com/RacingAroundJersey shirt or jacket, come up and say hello.

9) Wall Stadium isn't running again until October 22nd, so many of your friends and drivers will be making the trip to Delaware at some point during the weekend. Come join them, the track is kinda a bigger version of Wall, anyway. Just a whole lot FASTER!

8) The Friday schedule gives you a great excuse to skip work. Not only do you get to see the Camping World Truck Series race, but you also get Sprint Cup practice and qualifying.

7) Dover is so close to home you don't need a hotel. Most of us Jerseyans can make it to the track in less than 3 hours. This means you can even go multiple days, without staying overnight.

6) The tickets are actually pretty affordable, especially to bring the kids. Friday adult tickets range from $28 to $33, while children's tickets are $6 to$8. Saturday, adult tickets range from $47 to $52, with children at $8. The Sunday tickets vary greatly based on location, however there are sections where you can purchase an adult ticket for $55, and bring as many children as you would like for only $10 each.

5) Saturday you not only get the Nationwide race, but you also get to see Sprint Cup practice. This is a great day to bring your kid to his or her first NASCAR race. The Nationwide race is usually run pretty quick, and they still get to see their favorite Cup driver on the track for practice.

4) The souvenoir trailers. Get there early to walk around, and check out all they have to offer. You will not only find the newest shirts, hats, or collectibles for your favorite driver, but if you are willing to venture just off the speedway grounds you will find a number of merchants selling items from years past at very reasonable prices.

3) There is so much more to see than just the race. Many of the drivers have autograph sessions, along with meet and greets with members of the media. You can see the Speed Stage, and maybe even manage to get yourself on television. Many of the sponsors have interactive displays, along with contests for great prizes.

2) Miles the Monster. If you haven't seen him in person, you need to get to Dover some time this weekend. He can only truly be appreciated in person, your kids will love him, and he makes for a great photo opp.

1) And finally the number one reason to go to Dover this weekend. The chance to see not only one, but possibly two NJ drivers take home wins at the "Monster Mile." That's right I'm talking about the Truex brothers, afterall this is a NJ racing blog. Ryan in the Joe Gibbs Racing number 20 on Saturday, and older brother, Martin Truex Jr., in the Sprint Cup race on Sunday. Both have great chances. Ryan will be in a car that is expected to contend for the win everywhere it races, and Martin picked up the only win of his Sprint Cup career here.

So whatever the reason may be, whether it's one of the ones I listed above, or if you have your own reasons, try to find a way to get yourself to Dover this weekend. You won't be disappointed.

My Two Favorite Photos from New Hampshire

Check out my two favorite photos, released by NASCAR, from this weekend at New Hampshire. Of course they are both Modified related.

How cool is that painted on nerf bar on the #36?

Speed Channel Missing Great Opportunity with NASCAR Whelen Modifieds

If you are a fan of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, or just saw their most recent race on Saturday at New Hampshire, then you already know just how good the racing is in this division. Judging from the excitement of the announcing team, a collection of NASCAR Media members, and a former National Modified champion, Jimmy Spencer, you would come to the conclusion that most of the people involved in the sport are well aware of how competitive the races are, from start to finish, as well. Seems the only ones clueless to all this, in fact, may be the people in charge at the Speed Channel.
Yes, they do throw us Modified fans a few bones during the season. The Bristol, and New Hampshire races. They even sometimes mention them on The Speed Report, but beyond that, it is pretty much up to all of us to check out the action on YouTube, or read about it on blogs like this, or in Area Auto Racing News.
They just don't realize the opportunity they are missing with the two Modified series. A weekly show, much like ESPN's Thursday Night Thunder, featuring the Modifieds would, seemingly, bring the network a bigger audience than some of it's current programming. I'm not even suggesting live broadcasts. How about a one hour show every Tuesday night, during the summer, with an edited version of a race on either the North or Southern Tours. They could just not show the laps run under caution, and still have time to interview the winner.
While I know it takes alot of people and equipment to get one of these races taped for television, the NASCAR Modifieds actually offer the best solution of all the series out there to this problem. With many of the North races run at Thompson, Stafford, and even Riverhead, equipment wouldn't have to be transported long distances. The same is true of the Southern Tour.
Speed Channel could then come up with a schedule of taped events from both tours, to make a weekly television program, even if it was only ten weeks of programming it would still be eight more than Modified fans get now.
You can't tell me a weekly broadcast of Modified racing on the same night, and at the same time each week wouldn't outperform some of Speed Channel's current programiing. Afterall, do we really need a whole week of pre-race shows for the upcoming Sprint Cup race? I am a big racing fan, and I know I don't.
NASCAR drivers rush away from what they are doing to take in the action when the Modifieds are at the same track they are on a particular weekend. Ryan Newman thinks they are the most exciting race cars he has ever driven. NASCAR Media members brag on the racing the division has to offer.
Yet Speed Channel seems to remain, for the most part, clueless. Let's hope they too have finally caught the Modified bug, after this past Saturday's race at New Hampshire. Ask yourself this Speed, wouldn't you like to broadcast the most exciting race of the week, rather than another boring show filled with media members who themselves would much rather be watching the Mods?

The Wall Stadium Champions Are...

Wall Stadium managed to beat the weather on Saturday, get in a full night of racing, and crown champions in all of it's divisions. Congratulations from Racing Around Jersey to the following drivers:

   Wall Modified: Anthony Sesely
   Blewett Sportsman: Kevin Eyres
   Street Stocks: Howie Conk
   Factory Stock: Shannon Mongeau
   Inex Legends: Derek Hopkinson

Again congratulations to not only the champions, but to all the drivers, crews, and fans, who continued the tradition of Wall Stadium. Also, thank you to the Krause family for stepping up and doing what no one else was willing to do, have Wall open every weekend. There were definitely some bumps in the road, but they were learning on the job, and I'm sure 2012 will be an even better year.
Don't forget, Wall returns to action on October 22nd, with a 75-lapper for the Wall Modifieds, mark it down.

Ron Silk Wins the NASCAR Whelen Modified Race at New Hampshire

In what can only be described as one of the best races run in any series this year, Ron Silk, brought home the win in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at New Hampshire. He was followed by Todd Szegedy, Justin Bonsignore,Ted Christopher, who drove from the back twice, and Eric Beers. Ryan Newman blew up.

Richie Evans Fans Need to Check Out this Picture

Richie Evans, the legendary NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour driver from Rome, New York, is being honored not once, but twice at New Hampshire. Tommy Baldwin Racing will have the #36 Golden Corral car in the Sprint Cup event, not only sporting Evan's traditional orange paint scheme, but the car will also have nerf bars, and exposed exhaust headers painted on as well.
The "Mystic Missile", driven in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Series by Bobby Santos, will also carry the Evans colors.
Tommy Baldwin actually brought another tribute car to New Hampshire, the Len Boehler "Ole Blue", driven by Steve Park, however they were unable to qualify for the Sprint Cup race.
Check out this picture, so cool!

NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour New Hampshire Qualifying Top 5

The top five in qualifying for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour at New Hampshire are as follows.

1) Ron Silk
2) Eric Beers
3) Justin Bonsignore
4) Ryan Newman
5) Erick Rudolph
* NJ drivers Ken Woolley Jr., in the Ling Trucking/Atlantic Sprinklers #14, and Jamie Tomaino, in the Supreme Manufacturing #99, qualified 23rd and 24th respectively.

Martin Truex Jr. Shares a Memory About Dale Earnhardt Sr.

Returning to New Hampshire certainly brings back many memories for NJ's Martin Truex Jr. Between himself, his father, Martin Truex Sr., and younger brother, Ryan, they have a combined five wins on the "Magic Mile." However, the memory that sticks out the most to the NAPA Toyota driver, took place many years ago, and involves the late NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt.
"They used to run a combination race with the Busch North and regular Busch Series teams. My dad's Busch North car was parked across from Dale Earnhardt's car. I would watch him get out of his car. I even remember him getting up under his car to work on the carburetor. I was such a big fan of his. To be able to see him up that close and have my dad's car right next to his - I thought I was something. I was only 15 years old. That was a cool deal, and I will never forget it.", Truex shared.
Truex certainly hopes he can add another memory on Sunday at New Hampshire, a win.

NASCAR Changes the Rules for Talladega Race

Proving again that NASCAR is unlike any other sport, they have announced two rule changes for the upcoming Good Sam Club 500 Sprint Cup race at Talladega. The race occurs during what NASCAR considers their version of the playoffs, The Chase. A rule change, once the playoffs had already begun would be unheard of in another sport, however NASCAR is always looking to make the racing better.
The two changes they have announced will hopefully accomplish just that. First, the size of the restrictor plate will increase by 1/64 of an inch. The change should add approximately between 7-10 more horsepower to the cars. Nascar is hoping this change in conjunction with the second will aid drivers in their ability to pass.
The other change is being instituted in hopes of cutting down or even possibly eliminating the two car drafts we have seen recently at Talladega. NASCAR is reducing the pressure controlled by the pressure relief valve on the car's cooling system by 8 pounds per square inch. The goal of this rule change is to not allow a car to draft another for an extended period of time before beginning to overheat.
One has to applaud NASCAR's efforts toward making Talladega a better race, but at the same time perhaps question it's timing. While all the teams in The Chase have the same amount of time to prepare for the Talladega race, they don't all have the same resources at their disposal. Could a team like Stewart/Haas, who depends on Hendrick Motorsports for so much, not have a car with the same R&D as those driven by Dale Earnhardt Jr, Jeff Gordon, and Jimmie Johnson?
Most will agree a change had to be made to make the racing at Talladega better. What some might not agree on is the timing.

Michael Waltrip Racing Hires RCR Employee, Is it Who you Think?

The latest rumors concerning the future of current Richard Childress Racing driver Clint Bowyer are that he will end up in a Toyota in 2012, driving for Michael Waltrip Racing. While that has not yet been confirmed, MWR did announce the hiring of another RCR employee.
Scott Miller will become the executive vice president of competition for MWR beginning at the conclusion of the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule. Miller was a race-winning crew chief in the past, and most recently held the position of director of competition at RCR. He has worked for RCR since 1997, with the exception of one season.
Moves like this, and the potential signing of Clint Bowyer, can only serve to benefit NJ's Martin Truex Jr. and his NAPA Toyota team. The MWR team seems to be one of the few teams looking to expand, rather than contract. By adding individuals with a proven track record, with experience from a winning organization like RCR, the MWR teams seem to be looking to take their performance to the next level.
Hopefully, this move will be one of the final pieces needed to get the Garden State's Truex to where he wants to be. Challenging for both wins, and championships.

Numbers From Wall Stadium You Will Not Believe!

As I prepared to do my post on the final night of points-paying racing at Wall Stadium I decided to check out the point standings for all the divisions. While who was leading the points, or by what margin, did not surprise me, what did is the total number of cars to have earned points this year at Wall, especially in the Wall Modifieds.
Check out these numbers: Wall Modifieds-34
                                          Blewett Sportsman-23
                                          Factory Stocks-41
                                          Inex Legends-26
                                          Street Stocks-24

I have only been able to attend several events at Wall Stadium this season. I will be the first to admit, however, that the car counts have been somewhat disappointing. This is due to many factors, economy, rules, personalties, things many tracks are struggling with.
However, what those numbers show is the cars are out there. The next step is to get them to Wall on a more regular basis. I have my own ideas on that, but that is for another time and another post.
The numbers do make me think back to the days of when there were so many cars in the pits the track had to run consi events. While I doubt we will see that level of cars anytime soon, it's nice to know at least they exist. All Wall Stadium has to do is figure a way to get them there on a regular basis.

The Billy Pauch Show Finishes this Saturday at New Egypt Speedway with Twin 20's

The Big-Block Modifieds return to New Egypt Speedway, this Saturday, after a one week absence. This will be the final episode, as far as points races, of the Billy Pauch show. It may also be the most exciting when one looks at the circumstances resulting from his dominant season.
It is not often a driver has a season like Pauch has had at New Egypt in 2011. His 13 wins are 11 more than any other driver has managed this year. In fact, only two drivers have managed to win more than one, Gary Butler, and Wade Hendrickson, with two each.
Those 13 wins have also allowed him to maintain an almost 100 point lead over his nearest competitor in the standings, Rick Laubach. With feature wins awarding 50 points the only way Laubach could take the track title would be if Pauch somehow never made it to the track. A minimum of 20 points is awarded to any driver attempting to qualify for an event at New Egypt. This means as soon as the Ling Trucking number 1 rolls onto the speedway's dirt surface, Billy Pauch will be the New Egypt Speedway 2011 Champion.
The situation Pauch finds himself in is quite unusual for a driver leading the points going into the final night of points-paying races, especially with twin-20's on the schedule. Most final nights require the points leader to be cautious all night. Looking to avoid getting wrecked all while maintaining the position he needs to not lose the title. Not Pauch, he can simply just race.
That fact alone may make this Saturday night at New Egypt the most exciting one of the entire season. Billy Pauch, based on points, will start the two features deep in the field, as he has most of the season. However, this weekend he will be able to take chances he may have not been willing to take in previous races. The NJ legend will be letting it all hang out, nothing to lose.
The points race being over essentially also plays into the hands of Pauch's fellow competitors on Saturday. They will not have to worry about racing him hard, fearing a mistake by them could cost him the title. This Saturday at New Egypt could be a wrecker or checker night for just about every car that takes the green, especially in the final 20 of the night.
Who would of thought Billy Pauch's dominance at New Egypt in 2011 could actually be a good thing for everyone on the final night of points there? The final episode of the Billy Pauch show for 2011 at New Egypt, may actually be the best of the season. One thing for certain is, once it's over we won't be able to wait to see what he can do for an encore in 2012.

Swap Meet and Car Show Return to Raceway Park This Weekend

One of the most popular events among car lovers returns to Raceway Park, in Old Bridge, this weekend. The track known for it's NHRA event, and weekly drag racing will be filled with collector cars, hot rods, imports, and parts, parts, parts, this Friday, September 23rd thru Sunday, the 25th. Doesn't matter what kind of car you like, you will not only find it here, but there's a good chance you can find the parts needed to restore it.
The gates open all three mornings at 7am, and don't close until 6pm. Once you pay your $10 admission, you enter a facility that for this weekend is one part car show, another discount auto part store, and last part junkyard. The spectator parking area, and pit area, depending on where you enter present you with aisle after aisle of vendors selling car-related merchandise. You can choose to shop, or head straight for the 1/4 mile dragstrip, where the car show takes place.
I personally, even when I'm not looking for specific parts, love to start the day by walking up and down the many aisles of vendors before I head to the dragstrip. The car show portion is best viewed from about 11am to 2pm, anyway, as that is when most of the cars are present. The diversity of vendors is simply amazing. There are professional restoration part companies, right next to the local guy who started a project car, never finished it , and is now selling what was left over in his garage. Merchants selling new tires, next to a guy who seems more concerned about his bbq, and can of beer, than actually selling anything. For people looking to restore a vechicle, this area is like a giant treasure chest of potential hard-to-find parts, that they look forward to twice a year at Raceway Park.
Once you make it to the dragstrip, be prepared, no matter how car savy you may think you are, to see things you have never seen before. Rare, classic cars, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Custom machines, that have been chopped, lowered, or lifted. And the contrbution from the younger generation, imports, with high performance engines, wild paint schemes, and sound systems loud enough to drown out John Force's Mustang on a 1/4 mile run.
Raceway Park on Swap Meet weekend is truly a car lover's dream. The event takes up most of the grounds of the facility, and honestly, one day may not be enough to take it all in. Luckily, despite the fact that Raceway Park only hosts this event twice a year, once in the spring and again in the fall, it does take place over three days. Quite possibly the three best days a car lover in New Jersey can have.

Photos from NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour at Lime Rock

I never get tired of looking at NASCAR Modifieds. They are definitely the best-looking race cars in the world. My opinion of course, but enjoy these photos from Lime Rock.

Picture of Cake Presented to Don Ling from the "Cake Boss"

Here is the cake made by the "Cake Boss" bakery for Don Ling, that was presented to him by Wall Stadium.

Wall Stadium was So Much More than the John Blewett III Memorial Race Saturday

The John Blewett III Memorial Race at Wall Stadium had been circled on my calendar for a long time. JBIII was a great race car driver, and if possible an even better person. I was at Wall several days after John's tragic death, for that memorial, and I certainly didn't want to miss this one, especially with Jimmy Blewett competing.
While I headed to the track both out of respect for the Blewett family, and looking forward to a good extra-distance race, I left amazed by all that took place on this Saturday night. The race, if you only read about it would seem to have been a boring event. It was far from it.
Although Jimmy Blewett started on the outside pole, and led the entire race, the outcome was still in doubt in turns 3 & 4 on the last lap. Anthony Sesely roared into second on lap 8, and hounded Blewett for the remainder of the race. Sesely actually looked to have the better car, but the fact that it was Jimmy Blewett in front of him in the JBIII Memorial Race may have caused him to not try anything to extreme to get by. The race was also red flagged for a car that almost left the track, adding to the excitement.
Beyond the racing, there was plenty going on before one ever made it to their seat. There was a free raffle for all children entering the track, where one boy and one girl would each win a free bicycle. A band of three talented young people called "The Micro Machines", also entertained fans prior to the race. There were also several race cars on display, including the red, white, and blue, number 76 modified that was formerly driven by John Blewett III. The cars made for great photo opportunities, with many fans putting their children inside the cars for pictures.
Almost immediately upon entering the track, at one end of the gazebo where the Wall Stadium shirts are sold each week, members of the Blewett family including Janice Blewett, and Danielle Neff were selling JBIII Memorial Race shirts, bumper stickers, and bracelets. All the proceeds from the sales went to St.Judes Hospital for Children, just showing how special this family is. On a night honoring their late brother they took the opportunity to help others.
Wall Stadium management, the Krause family, also had a tribute for a very special man to many NJ racers, Don Ling. He has been a sponsor of both drivers, and tracks in NJ for many years. In fact, if it weren't for Don Ling there may have not been a Turkey Derby in 2010, and there may have not been the full season of racing at Wall we saw in 2011.
Ling was presented a card, larger than he is tall, signed by many fans, and competitors. This was done in a ceremony on the infield, where his grandaughter, Shawna Ingraham, who competes in the Sportsman division, read a statement from Ling. He was then presented a cake which was an exact reproduction of Shawna's car made by Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken. This is the bakery seen on television on the show "Cake Boss."
I headed to Wall Stadium to show my respect to the Blewett family, and enjoy some good racing action. While I would of been satisfied with just that, I left glad I had not missed a night I will remember for some time. Thank you Wall Stadium. Thank you Blewett family, and thank you Don Ling.

Top Ten Reasons to go to Wall Stadium Saturday, Letterman Style

This is my top ten reasons to attend the John BlewettIII Memorial Race at Wall Stadium this Saturday, done in David Letterman style.

10) The weather is supposed to be clear, but with a chill in the air. Perfect for the Wall Modified engines, yet still making the track slighty slick. Sort of a preview of Turkey Derby weekend.

9) New Egypt Speedway isn't running the Big-Blocks this Saturday because of the Freedom 76 at Grandview, and it's been awhile since you've been to the Jersey Shore speedway.

8) I will be there with my 4 year old son explaining to him the race is in honor of one of the best racers the state of NJ has ever seen, but the reason all these people are here is because he was an even better person.

7) The track will be collecting non-perishables for the victims of Hurricane Irene. This is a great chance to empty your cabinets of all that extra food you bought in anticipation of the storm, but now will never eat, and help some unfortunate locals.

6) You can see two young women compete in real racing action, not powder-puff. Amanda Sesely, in Modifieds, and Shawna Ingraham, in Sportsman, are great examples to the young girls in the stands that they can do anything the boys do.

5) The Sportsman, most Saturdays the most competitive division at Wall, will be running a 38-lap feature, giving you a total of 114 laps of open wheel action.

4) There will be new JBIII t-shirts on sale. If you were truly a fan of John, you certainly won't want to miss the opportunity to pick one up. They will certainly sell-out fast.

3) The track will also be honoring Don Ling on Saturday. If it were a race between who has done more to help NJ racing between the Blewetts and Ling the two would come out of turn four wheel to wheel, and we as fans would be the winners. Wall Stadium management has several surprises scheduled that you don't want to miss.

2) Jimmy Blewett, the younger brother of John, will be competing in a #76 car. This has been the car number associated with the Blewett family for many, many years. Just thinking about Jimmy battling for the lead in a #76 car, passing over the III painted on the backstretch asphalt for 76 laps gets me a little emotional. Should he manage to win, there may not be a dry eye in the place.

1) And the number one reason to attend the JBIII Memorial Race at Wall Stadium is to show your appreciation of a very special man, from an incredible family. They continue to be active in and support a sport that took from them their grandson, son, brother, and father, just four years ago in a racing accident at Thompson. Show them how big an impression John Blewett III made on you. Show them you have not forgotten "JohnBoy". Afterall, I think John would want you at Wall Stadium, don't you?

Clint Bowyer Set to Join Truex at Michael Waltrip Racing

Clint Bowyer, as more and more time has gone by, looked to be running out of options for a seat in NASCAR Sprint Cup in 2012, and beyond. However a statement put out today by Michael Waltrip, may hold the clue as to where the current Richard Childress Racing driver will finally sign.
Richard Childress had already announced that as much as they would love to keep Bowyer in their stable, they have been unable to secure any sponsorship. Richard Petty Motorsports was reportedly involved in talks to bring him into their camp, but have since withdrawn their offer.
Then today, Michael Waltrip, issues a statement saying he currently has nothing to announce regarding Clint Bowyer. If that isn't the statement we hear every time before an announcement is made I don't know what is.
So it looks like, very shortly, there will be an announcement giving NJ's Martin Truex Jr. a new teammate.
Leave it to Michael Waltrip to find a sponsor!

Check Out This 1O Year Old Racer's Website

If you are a long-time fan of racing in New Jersey, you almost certainly recognize the name Conner. Jerry Conner was one of the drivers to beat in the Street Stock division, at Wall Stadium, for years. He was even part of a team with Tom Mauser, with almost indentically painted number 45's, as Tom and Jerry Racing.
His two sons, Pride and Shannon, went on to become racers themselves. Shannon stayed active in the sport, longer, going on to win the Race of Champions for Street Stocks, and compete in the D/A Modifieds, and NASCAR Modifieds at Flemington Speedway.
Now the next generation of Conner's is competing, also with the number 45, and he may just be the best of them all. The 10 year old has already put together an impressive array of wins, and top performances, in many of the top races in and around North Carolina.
You really have to check out the website of Kodie Conner to see all he has accomplished in such a short time.
The youngster is also looking for sponsorship to help him continue on towards a career that takes him to NASCAR one day. If you, or anyone you know, is interested in helping this future star follow his dream you can contact him through his website.

Another Reason to Attend JBIII Memorial Race at Wall Stadium this Saturday

Many of you know how much I am looking forward to this Saturday night at Wall Stadium. There are many reasons why, and I will put together a list of those for tomorrow. However, I really thought this latest reason deserved a post of it's own.
Wall Stadium will be honoring a man that has done so much for the sport of autoracing in New Jersey. Don Ling, a man that has seemingly been involved longer than he has been alive, in so many ways. He has been a car owner, a sponsor of so many race cars I bet he even loses count during the season, and most importantly a friend who can be counted on in a time of need.
This man is one of the reasons, a very important one, that Wall Stadium still exists today. He and John Blewett, made sure there was a Turkey Derby in 2010. He was also very instrumental in the deal that currently has the Krause family promoting the speedway every weekend, something no one else wanted to do.
Don Ling will be honored in a number of ways this Saturday night, including a large card that can be signed by drivers, and fans alike. There will also be a surprise for him, that the fans will be able to share in, that you won't want to miss.
So if you were on the fence about whether to attend or not. Let me just say this, wouldn't you like the chance to thank both the Blewett family, and Don Ling for all that they have done, for not only Wall Stadium, but NJ racing in general?
This Saturday is your chance, don't miss it. I know I won't!

Jimmy Blewett Returns to Wall Stadium in Race Honoring his Brother

When the Wall Modifieds take to the track this Saturday night at the Jersey Shore speedway there will be a driver not seen there in awhile, yet very well-known to all in attendance. This driver will come to win, like he always does, only this time he will have a little more motivation. His name is Jimmy Blewett, and the race he is returning to compete in is held in tribute to his brother, the John Blewett III Memorial Race.
Jimmy Blewett has not competed at Wall Stadium, all year, choosing to take up the new challenge of driving a dirt car at nearby New Egypt Speedway. The Howell, NJ driver has run a few NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour races in 2011, but for the most part has spent most Saturdays at New Egypt. However, with New Egypt not running the Big-Block Modifieds he competes in, and Wall running this race on the same weekend, he almost seemed destined to compete.
This will certainly not be an easy race for Blewett to win, as he has done here so many times in the past. Not just because of the competition he will face from drivers like Anthony Sesely, Chas Okerson, or Tim Arre. He will also have to face returning to a place his brother, John, and he, literally grew up at. Perhaps hardest of all, though, may be running down the backstretch of the high-banked oval, passing over the III painted there in honor of his brother 76 times, as he tries to win for not just himself, but the entire Blewett family.
"Showtime" as Jimmy Blewett is known to many, is a driver much like Sprint Cup competitor Kyle Busch. It seems you either love his aggressive driving style or you hate it. However, one thing is certain should Jimmy Blewett be all over the bumper of the leader with five laps to go, everyone in the place will be rooting for him, whether they admit it or not. And should he actually manage to win, there may not be a dry eye in the place.
If you are truly a New Jersey race fan then you know how much the Blewett family has given to this sport. Money, excitement, driver opportunities, and most of all a grandson, son, brother, and father, John III. He was loved by many, missed by more, and he always had a love for Wall Stadium. He has been gone for four years, yet it seems so much longer.
With no disrespect to the other racetracks running this Saturday night, and whether you have vowed for one reason or another to not return to Wall Stadium, if you knew John III, then you know this is where he would want us to all be. Where many of us saw our first race, and grew to know many here better than we know our own family. And get to see a great race in his honor while we are there.

I Know What You Missed at Wall Stadium Sunday

I have been to Wall Stadium more times than any other racetrack I have ever been too. I have also been to possibly every Monster Truck show presented at Raceway Park in the last two years, thanks to my 4 year old son's love of them. Sunday, my son and I were among those who were fortunate enough to attend the Monster Truck and stunt show at Wall, and it may have been the best time I have ever had at the Jersey Shore speedway.
I say fortunate because sadly the event wasn't that well attended. There were several factors working against this show from the start. Sunday was the first day of the NFL season. There was a NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at Thompson in Connecticut that had many Wall Stadium regulars out of the area. The present economic times also make it hard for families to attend two motorsports events in the same weekend, and to make it worse, although it didn't rain at Wall, it was raining in many of the surrounding towns.
I have to admit I had my doubts about how good this show would be with only six Monster Trucks, however, the performance of those trucks, and most of the rest of the show made up for the lack of quantity. The show started with a motorcycle jump over a Monster Truck, complete with an explosion.
The show also featured bicycle stunts, a motorcycle riding through walls of fire, stunts on a quad, and a man blowing himself up in a car. The stars of the show were, of course, the Monster Trucks. The wide open space of Wall Stadium's infield allowed them to really perform. They were able to show their true power and speed as they jumped over, and crushed the cars placed on the infield. They did slap-wheelies, spun in donuts, and Bigfoot even managed to drive on it's two right wheels until eventually crashing onto it's roof.
The star of the show, however, had to be the Monster Truck rides. For $10 you could sit in the back of a real Monster Truck, and leave from the pit area, rolling down the high-banks of the speedway. You were then taken 3/4's of the way around the track, at which time it proceeded onto the infield, and did two donuts, before heading back up the banking to return to the pits.
I took this ride with my 4 year old son, and the look on his face was priceless. This was something I am sure we will both never forget. There are limited opportunities in our lives when we get to share memorable experiences with our children, and this was one.
It's really a shame more people didn't get to witness this show. While it was a little rough around the edges, mostly due to the announcer being part of the show, overall, the performances were very entertaining, especially for the younger fans in the audience.
So if you weren't able to make it out to Wall this past Sunday, I'm sorry for what you missed. The track is doing it's best to provide other types of entertainment, which would help secure it's future as well. So any time you can I would recommend you get out to not only Wall, but any of our local tracks in New Jersey. Afterall, once you've missed it, you've missed it. Happily for my son and I we didn't miss it, and now we will never forget it.

Thompson NASCAR Modified Event Dominated by One Driver

It would hardly come as a surprise to many if you told them the special NASCAR Modified event held today at Thompson was dominated by a Connecticut driver. Afterall, Ted Christopher had been nothing short of almost unbeatable here recently. However, while it was a Connecticut driver in victory lane twice today, it wasn't Christopher, but rather Doug Coby.
Coby collected his second career NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race in the Northern Thompson 150. This also gave him a front row starting spot in the non-points, 50 lap UNOH Showdown, with the winner of the Southern Thompson 150, George Brunnhoelzl III. Coby jumped to the lead on the start, and led every lap for the win.
The UNOH Showdown was made up of the top 12 drivers in each 150 from earlier in the day, and 12 other selected drivers. I have listed the top 12 in each 150, and top 10 from the 50-lapper below.

Jimmy Blewett Returns to Thompson in Family-Owned 76

To say Thompson International Speedway has been unkind to Jimmy Blewett would be the biggest understatement ever made. Despite being one of the top Modified drivers, in the Northeast, for many years, he has yet to win at the Connecticut speedway in his 22 starts there. Yet, those statistics pale in comparison to the personal tragedy he, and his family, suffered here a little more than four years ago.
Jimmy, was racing with his older brother John, just after a restart, when the two collided. The resulting crash tragically resulted in the death of John Blewett III. A family, well known and respected throughout NASCAR, and with race fans along the entire East Coast, was devastated.
Jimmy, who has spent much of 2011 learning the ins and outs of dirt racing at New Egypt Speedway, with the exception of a handful of starts on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, will return to Thompson this weekend. When the Howell, N.J. driver rolls onto the track he will do so in the Blewett family-owned number 76. A car number very special to not only their family, but to New Jersey race fans for many years.
Jimmy, who at one time went by the nickname of "Showtime", has been a very polarizing driver over the years among fans. Seems you are either a fan of his aggressive style or you are not. However, one thing is clear, should he manage to win this weekend at Thompson the ovation may only be exceeded by the number of tears shed by those who know the Blewett family history.
The weekend at Thompson may actually give Jimmy two shots at a victory. NASCAR has put together a pretty interesting event that will see the Southern Modified Tour run a 125-lap event at 12:30pm on Sunday, followed at 2:30pm by a 125-lap race for the North cars. They will then run a 50-lap event for the top 12 finishers in each race, along with 12 provisionals for a 36 car field to complete the day.
I wrote a post, NJ's Chances for a NASCAR Whelen Modified Win Ended with the Passing of John Blewett III, recently, that I really hope is disproved this weekend by Jimmy. Most weekends I just hope the Tour has good weather, and a great race, not really caring who wins. You see I lost my favorite Modified driver in that crash here at Thompson four years ago.
This weekend I will be hoping beyond hope that somehow Jimmy Blewett can win here. Not because it would make a great story, but because the Blewett family deserves it. Good Luck Jimmy.

Ryan Truex Qualifies Well for Richmond Nationwide Race Tonight

Ryan Truex, in his second start for Joe Gibbs Racing in the Schick Xtreme3 Toyota number 20, had a solid qualifying effort. The young New Jersey driver will start from the 10th position, sharing the fifth row with Sprint Cup driver Jamie McMurray. Brad Keselowski continued to be hot, as he took the pole.
Truex is driving for the same number 20 team that practically dominated the race here at Richmond in the Spring, with Denny Hamlin driving. Hamlin led 199 of the 251 laps. Not much pressure for the young driver, yeah right!
I'm sure Ryan will do his home state and fans proud.

Martin Truex Jr. Helps Repair Car for Family Dealing with Cancer

Martin Truex Jr., the driver of the NAPA Toyota in NASCAR Sprint Cup competition, got a chance to be a part of a very special pit stop today in Richmond, Virginia. The pit stop had nothing to do with racing, but everything to do with helping a family whose mother is a remarkable person dealing with breast cancer.
Truex visited Carroll's Auto Services to supervise, and lend a helping hand, to shop employees there who were installing new NAPA brakes, and doing much needed repairs to the 10 year old car of the Smith family, free of charge. The mother of the family, Nanette, has been battling breast cancer for six years all while raising her two teenagers, with her husband Lee, and still working days as a hospice worker.
Much of the family's income is spent on the medical expenses related to radiation and chemotherapy treatments to fight her disease. This just didn't leave anything to address the much needed repairs.
Most amazing to Truex, and the others on hand was the fact that she considers herself lucky to have cancer as she said, " Because of the cancer I have had a lot of wonderful things happen to me. I mean that. I've had support from friends, family, my church family, and people I don't even know."
The family will also be special guests in the pits of the NAPA Toyota for the Saturday night race at Richmond. Something tells me if the NAPA team needs an extra hand during the race they may just have to hold this woman back from doing what she does everyday, help others while dealing with her own struggles.
Napa is planning on helping a total of 56( Truex's car number) families or organizations in need of car repairs, in the Richmond area, from now through October.

New Egypt Speedway to Honor First Responders on 9/11 Weekend

This Sunday, September 11, marks the ten year anniversary of perhaps the most tragic event to affect our country in my lifetime. It seems we all know someone who was affected either directly, or indirectly. While many of the first responders in the Central, New Jersey region weren't directly involved in the initial rescues, the tragic event serves to remind us how important these people are to all of us.
Many of the first responders in New Jersey are volunteers, something that has amazed me for years. The people mowing the grass in our local towns are paid, but not many of those who will risk their own lives to try to save ours.
New Egypt Speedway will be doing their best, this weekend, to show their appreciation to these amazing people with it's "Tribute to First Responders / 911 Night" on Saturday. All active first responders, with a valid I.D., will be admitted to the speedway free of charge for the night sponsored by Mr. Bob Drayton Inc.
The first responders, and the rest of the race fans on hand this Saturday night will be treated to a full card of racing action. The Big-Block Modifieds will be joined by the Sportsman, Outlaw Stocks, and the very popular powder-puff races.
The racing action is scheduled to get underway at 6pm. Admission is $20 for adults, $10 for children(12-15), and under 12, free.
If you are lucky enough to get out to New Egypt, Saturday night, make sure you take the opportunity to thank those that too many of us take for granted until we really need them.

Any Slot Car Racers Out There?

Since I know there are many among us New Jersey race fans that either currently, or in the past have raced slot cars, I wanted to pass on this offer from the Central Jersey Daily Deal. They, currently, have a special from The Race Place, in Farmingdale, for 60 minutes of track time for only $6.
This offer works like Groupon, it only goes into effect if enough people purchase the deal, but you aren't charged until the deal becomes valid either. I have provided a link to check it out.

Sex Tape Set to Shock the NASCAR World?

As I posted yesterday, someone I trust immensely, and with connections within the inner circle of NASCAR, emailed me with information regarding a scandal set to break involving a driver currently qualified for The Chase.
While I have not been able to confirm all the information to be true, something mentioned in the email did take place today. I will not be able to elaborate until there is more proof acvailable, however, there is rumored to be a sex tape involved.
This scandal has the potential to not only affect the parties involved, but also other drivers, and crews, throughout NASCAR.
Hopefully I can give you more info in the days to come. Be sure to become a follower by entering your email to the right of this post to receive updates.

Big Scandal Involving NASCAR Chase Driver Set to Break?

I was contacted today by someone who I trust immensely, and who has close ties to people in the know in NASCAR. This person has told me a huge scandal is about to break involving a Sprint Cup driver, and his wife. The driver is among those who have already clinched a spot in The Chase.
While I have not been able to confirm what I have been told, as of yet, if it is true, this will be the biggest scandal to ever hit NASCAR, and has the potential to affect many more in the sport than just the husband and wife.
Trust me, if this breaks like I have been told it will no one will be talking about The Chase.

There is Still Plenty of Racing Left, this Labor Day Weekend, in Jersey

Most weekends, in New Jersey, Saturday night brings us the final races of the weekend. This Labor Day weekend, that is certainly not the case, as we still have some pretty intense motorcycle racing going on Sunday, and even some more dirt racing on Monday.
New Jersey Motorsports Park, located in Millville, continues it's AMA Championship weekend on Sunday. Action gets underway early, with practice sessions scheduled for 8:30 to 10:20am. Following an hour break for lunch, there will be a hot dog eating contest, a Hell on Wheels stunt show, a Fan Walk of the track with several of the day's competitors, and even a chance for fans to take to the track with their personal cars or motorcycles.
The racing is scheduled to get underway at 12:30pm with the first of four feature events, all the last of the year for the series, which will be holding it's awards banquet, Monday, in Atlantic City. First up is the Vance & Hines XR1200 race, followed by the Motorcycle Superstore.com SuperSport R2 race. The final two races of the day will be the Daytona SportBike, and National Guard SuperBike events, both 23 laps long on the very tricky road course.
Besides all the great motorcycle racing, Sunday, at NJMP, there is also a South Jersey Derby Girls rollerderby exhibition, and several other stunt shows. This facility knows how to keep you entertained, between events. Sunday would make a great day to head down to this South Jersey facility and check it out. The weather is supposed to be good, and they will have you home in plenty of time for the NASCAR Sprint Cup race from Atlanta, later tonight.
New Egypt Speedway takes advantage of the day off for many race fans, on Monday, to present it's Labor Day Romano Memorial race. Scheduled to get underway at 5pm, the night will feature an 84-lap main event for the Sportsman cars. The 305 Sprints will also be in competition.
Spectator gates open at 2pm, with hot laps starting the night at 4pm. Adult admission is $20, children(12-15) $10, and kids 11 and under free.
So don't just lay around the house for the rest of the weekend, waiting for racing to come on the television. Head down to NJMP on Sunday, and check out some great motorcycle racing in person, or get over to New Egypt on Monday to watch the Sportsman try to endure 84 grueling laps on the dirt, or better yet do both. The racing season is winding down, here in the Garden State, and you might want to get in as much racing as possible.

Truex Brothers in the Spotlight this Labor Day Weekend in Atlanta

The Truex brothers of Mayetta, New Jersey, Ryan and Martin, will both be in the spotlight on this NASCAR weekend in Atlanta. Ryan for his first start for a very good team, and Martin, who besides racing will be making an appearance on Speed Channel.
Ryan will make his first of six scheduled starts for Joe Gibbs Racing in the number 20 Schick Xtreme3 Toyota, on Saturday at Atlanta. Although he drove earlier this season for Pastrana/Waltrip Racing, until sponsorship ran out, and ran well, this will be the best team he has ever driven for. The number 20 sits 12th in NASCAR Nationwide Series owner points, despite a lack of a full-time driver, and sponsor. This will be a big opportunity for the Garden State driver to showcase his skills, and ,maybe, even pick uo a win.
Martin Truex Jr. will also be racing, but on Sunday in the NASCAR Sprint Cup event. Martin, however, will be in the spotlight at Atlanta for a different reason. He will be making an appearance on Speed Channel's RaceDay program on Sunday at 4:30pm. He will be joined by Brad Keselowski, who he finished second to last week.
This could truly go down as a special Labor Day weekend for the Truex family. With Ryan strapping into a car that is capable of winning every time it takes the track, and Martin's NAPA team seemingly running better and better each week. It is entirely possible the Truex brothers could leave Atlanta with a trophy each. Now that would be pretty incredible.

I Got Invited to the White House

As a member of NASCARMedia I get emails everyday inviting me to cover either an event or press conference involving a NASCAR driver, owner, or official. Most of these are usually held in Charlotte, N.C., or the city closest to that weekend's events, making them unrealistic for me to attend.
However, even I was surprised to open an email which gave me all the details I would need to attend a press conference/event being held at the White House. Seems President Obama will use the opportunity of NASCAR being in Richmond next week, to have Jimmie Johnson, and the rest of the 2010 Chase contenders honored during a visit to Washington, D.C.
That's right the 2010 Chase contenders, but then again, is it really any surprise our government officials are nearly a year behind.
Interestingly, of the 12 drivers invited, five declined the invitation due to previous obligations. They were Greg Biffle, Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards, Kevin Harvick, and Tony Stewart. One has to wonder, are they actually busy, or are they Republicans.
Sadly for me, while this is probably the only time I will ever be invited to the White House, I too am busy.

First Views of 2012 Toyota Camry NASCAR Sprint Cup

Joe Gibbs Racing has released the first pictures of the Toyota Camry scheduled to be run in 2012 in NASCAR Sprint Cup action. Check them out, just shows you how early the top teams are already working on next year's cars.

Joe Gibbs Racing Website Mentions Wall Stadium

For those of you who have not really been paying attention, Ryan Truex, the younger brother of NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Martin Truex Jr., is about to makes his debut for Joe Gibbs Racing in the Nationwide Series. He will be driving the number 20 car that has been piloted, in many races this year, by Home Depot Toyota driver, Joey Logano.
I was as surprised as anyone, when I checked the Joe Gibbs Racing website for an update on Ryan, and found a driver profile that included, among other things, a reference to Wall Stadium. What surprised me the most was a mention of the track, simply because Ryan actually only raced there for a short time. I guess the overall lack of years of racing experience, left room for the Wall Stadium reference.
If you would like to check out the profile yourself I provided a link below.
