People I know who aren't too familiar with the sport of racing, have asked me for years, why don't you race? They know how passionate I am about the sport, what they fail to realize is how little ability I have to wheel a race car. Yes, to those who are that unfamiliar with the sport, you do need talent to be any good.
I too, like many of the children sitting in the stands at Wall Stadium, every Saturday night with my dad, used to dream of being inside one of those coupes, or Pintos, or Gremlins. Battling it out with drivers like Gil Hearne, John Blewett Jr., or Tom Mauser.
I would watch the street stocks, and think how much fun it would be to bang doors with Jerry Conner, or Bob Howard. Maybe a Modified would be out of my reach, but certainly not a street stock, right? Afterall, you just went down to the junkyard, bought a Camaro, threw a rollcage in it, and raced.
My first introduction to the realities of driving a race car, came with my becoming a part-time crewmember on the street stock of Shannon Conner. I got to see just how much time he, his father Jerry, and brother Pride, put into their cars. While I would join them in the pits to help out anyway I could, they would put in countless hours in the garage getting the cars ready for the upcoming racing that Saturday night.
Mistakenly, I still thought, given the chance I could drive one of these machines on the high banks of Wall Stadium, or even the small track at Pocono when we went there for the Race of Champions.
I didn't realize how wrong I was until years later on a road trip with Jamie Wolf's race team. We stopped at a go-kart track, on our way back from a race. By this time I had actually graduated to going over the wall in NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour events, sometimes even as the gasman, all 160 pounds of me.
The track in Binghamton, New York allowed our entire team to strap into the go-karts and head onto the oval at once. My first clue of not having any ability to ever race a car came when our driver at the time, the late Jim Willis, passed me rather easily, but hey he's a NASCAR Modified driver I thought. More clues came in the way of several more crewmembers passing me, and Willis seeming to lap me every other circuit.
However, the moment I truly recognized my complete lack of talent to ever drive a race car came when the girl who held the pit sign on the pitstops passed me. I had become an obstacle on the track, not a competitor. An obstacle who's childhood dream of driving a race car was now over.
I spent several more years helping out the Jamie Wolf race team, until my son was born. I have spent much of the last four years raising my son, and not getting out to the tracks as much as I would've liked. I would also like to think I am a much better dad than I ever would of been behind the wheel of a race car. Afterall, at four he can tell the difference between a Formula One car, an Indy Car, and a NASCAR Modified.
Getting back to the whole point of writing this. When I realized just how little talent I had behind the wheel, it made me realize just how talented others are. Also, the levels of talent, the great local racer, the great touring regular, all the way up to the highest levels at Sprint Cup, Formula One, etc. I don't have any of that talent, but it makes me appreciate those who do even more.
Luckily for me I have found a forum to stay involved in the sport. Writing about it. I just wonder, sometimes, do you ever think Dale Earnhardt Jr. takes a pause, and thinks, good thing I can drive a race car, cause I certainly can't write?
Probably not.

Grasso and Pauch Keep "Jersey Rush" Money in Jersey
It only seems right that a race program called the "Jersey Rush" should be won by New Jersey drivers. That is exactly what happened on Tuesday night at New Egypt Speedway. The 410 Sprint, and Big-Block Modified events were both captured by Garden State residents.
JJ Grasso, making his debut in the 410 Sprints, looked like a veteran of the division, as he conquered a star-studded field of competitors. Grasso, the current points leader in the URC division, has long considered New Egypt to be his favorite track, with numerous wins in past races at the facility. However, the "Jersey Rush" win, and the $5,000 purse that comes with it, will certainly make this his biggest win at his home state track.
As for the Big-Blocks, it was business as usual for Frenchtown's Billy Pauch. The legendary driver took home another big payday of $3,000 at the track he has been nothing short of dominant at this year. In fact, the biggest surprise of the evening may have just been that he didn't win both feature events. He has been that good this year!
The "Jersey Rush" will continue for Grasso and Pauch tomorrow, as they both "rush" to their respective banks to make some rather large deposits. The Jersey Boys got it done!

Pauch Family Looks to Keep "Jersey Rush" Money in New Jersey
When the gates open this afternoon at New Egypt Speedway to allow competitors from all over the Northeast into the pits for tonight's "Jersey Rush" event, one NJ family will be doing their best to make sure all the winnings stay in the Garden State. The father and son tandem of Billy Pauch, and Billy Pauch Jr., from Frenchtown, will certainly be among the drivers to watch, at the very least.
The "Jersey Rush" consists of two feature events, one for the visiting 410 Sprints, and the other for the Big-Block Modifieds that run at the track on most Saturday nights. While Billy Pauch Jr. is only entered in the Big-Block division, his father will compete in both. The 410 Sprint feature will pay $5,000 to win, while the Modifieds will compete for $3,000, making this, potentially, a very good payday for the Pauch family.
While Billy Pauch Jr. hasn't had the type of success his father has at New Egypt, but who has, he has been running better lately, wherever he competes. He will certainly have the help of the one person who gets around the track better than anyone else, his father.
Billy Pauch Sr., however, may not have much time to advise his son, as he will compete in both divisions on Tuesday. He will certainly be the man to beat in the Big-Blocks, a division he has dominated in 2011 at New Egypt. His biggest challenge of the night will certainly come in the 410 Sprint race. The question will be can his experience at the track overcome his not being a regular in a sprint car of any sort in years.
The car he will be piloting is one he has had great success in the past. The J&M Motorsports team is the same one with which he won the first ever 410 Sprint race held at New Egypt in 1999. They have also won the Grandview King of the Hill in 2001, and the Hagerstown Octoberfest, also in 1999, when working together.
Pauch Sr. will also face a stout field in the 410 Sprint event that includes Shane Stewart, Fred Rahmer, Daryn Pitman, Lance DeWease, Frank Cozze, JJ Grasso, Davey Sammons, Steve Buckwalter, and many more.
The Pauch family will certainly represent their home state of New Jersey well tonight at New Egypt. They are bringing great equipment, great experience, and a plan to keep most of the "Jersey Rush" money home in Jersey.

Two Out of Three NJ Stock Car Tracks Report No Damage
Once I realized that everyone who is important to me was ok following Hurricane Irene, my attention turned towards the racetracks of the Garden State. Specifically, Bridgeport Speedway, New Egypt Speedway, and Wall Stadium.
I am happy to report I have heard from both New Egypt and Wall Stadium, and both tracks weathered the storm well. While I have not gotten a response, yet, from Bridgeport, there is also nothing on their website indicating there was any major damage. Let's hope that's the case.
New Egypt, in fact, has plans to go forward with their "Jersey Rush" 410 Sprint event this Tuesday night. Please check out my post on NJ.com about the event by clicking the link below.

Martin Truex Jr. Just one Win Shy of The Chase
When NASCAR made the changes to the qualifying procedures for The Chase, they hoped it would create some more excitement, and offer a winner, who had an otherwise poor year a chance. Certainly the last thing they thought was it would cost a driver like Dale Earnhardt Jr. or Tony Stewart a spot, and offer a chance, instead to a driver like Martin Truex Jr.
A quick look at the points show both Dale Jr. and Stewart barely holding on to the ninth and tenth spots in The Chase with only two events remaining before the field is set. Brad Keselowski, with his three wins, will go from wildcard qualifier in The Chase, to the top ten qualifier, if he maintains his current pace of picking up points.
This would knock either Stewart or Dale Jr. into a position where they would need a win to qualify as a wildcard entry. Neither driver looks to have a winning run in them, if their recent performances are any indication.
The most unbelievable scenario in all this for New Jersey, and/or Martin Truex Jr. race fans is should the Garden State driver manage to win one of the next two races he has a legitimate shot at making The Chase. Truex sits 17th in points, ahead of drivers Paul Menard, and Regan Smith, who have won already this year. In fact, the only driver ahead of him with a win in 2011 is Denny Hamlin, who has also been struggling this year.
There exists a very real possibility, that both Dale Jr., and Stewart could both fall from the top-ten, and if they are unable to win one of the next two races, that would open up a spot for Truex, should he find a way to win one of them.
Certainly, the first thing Truex must do is win. After that, the pieces may just fall into place. Poor performances by Dale Jr., and Stewart, and the continued top finishes by Keselowski, would actually put Truex in contention for the final spot in The Chase.
While it will still take a tremendous effort by Truex and his NAPA Toyota team, and some bad luck, or exceptionly bad runs by others, the mere fact that he still has a chance is amazing. NASCAR has certainly given some New Jersey race fans a chance of hope that their native son might actually have a shot to contend for another championship.

NJ's Chance at a NASCAR Whelen Modified Win Ended with Passing of John Blewett III
I can't help think about, perhaps the greatest asphalt Modified driver I have ever seen in my lifetime, the late John Blewett III, every time I get to witness a NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race. This was especially true as I looked forward to, and watched this week's race at Bristol.
You see, as much as I am a fan of the Modifieds, I am just that much more a fan of NJ drivers. When I looked at the entry list for Wednesday's Bristol race it pained me to see only one entrant from New Jersey, Jamie Tomaino. While I have a great respect for Jamie, and all he has accomplished in his career, the truth is he had very little chance of contending for a win.
The name missing from that list, John Blewett III, would of not only given NJ another entrant, but one that would've certainly been counted among the favorites to challenge eventual winner Ryan Newman. Four years later, and another NJ driver has not stepped up to claim that spot.
Honestly, the amount of talented young drivers who could possibly do well on the Tour, from NJ, is limited at best. Wall Stadium would obviously be the launching point for anyone looking to advance onto the Tour, and frankly, I can only think of one driver who could currently compete, with an honest chance of winning. Anthony Sesely.
The Matawan driver seems to have the right amount of aggressiveness, and car control necessary to be a contender. Whether he will ever get that chance is unknown. The Tour is not only extremely expensive, but incredibly time consuming. With a majority of the events located in Connecticut, and others in Iowa, and now Canada, it requires someone with the ability to miss a significant time from work.
Another young driver who appears to possibly have the ability to advance his career beyond Wall Stadium would be Eric Mauriello. However, he has not even advanced to the Wall Modifieds, yet, so the Tour isn't even realistic to think about, at this time.
A driver who is originally from NJ, and shows the talent necessary to contend on the Tour, is Danny Bohn. The son of Eddie Bohn currently competes in the North Carolina area, where his family relocated to work for Ray Evernham. He even won, earlier this year, at Bowman Gray Stadium, in an older and heavier machine than the rest of the field.
Sad as it is to say, New Jersey's chance at winning an event on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, may have ended at Thompson International Speedway, four years ago, this month. John Blewett III is missed by many people, for many different reasons. Selfishly for me, it's every time I get to see a NASCAR Mod race, and know if John was only in the field, NJ would not only have a chance, but a contender.

Bristol NASCAR Modified Photos from Wednesday
Since we are all left with no live racing action on this Saturday night, as we await the arrival of Hurricane Irene, I thought I would post some pictures direct from NASCAR of the Modifieds.
Racing in NJ This Weekend is Canceled, Wall Stadium in Danger?
Hurricane Irene has caused all three oval tracks in NJ to cancel their racing programs for this weekend. I hope everyone is well-prepared, and that you all will stay safe. I also hope that none of our precious racetracks suffer any substantial damage.
Sadly, should Wall Stadium receive damage to the racing surface, or the spectator areas, I just don't know if this track, which has struggled the last few years, will survive. With owners who are looking to sell the property for something other than a racetrack, it would be difficult to convince them to rebuild the facility.
New Egypt Speedway and Bridgeport Speedway both have ownership that is committed to their respective tracks. While significant damage may cause the two dirt tracks to miss some events, they would certainly rebuild, and return.
Stay safe everyone, and I hope none of us lose power before the Bristol race is over.

Ryan Newman May Have Other Sprint Cup Drivers Looking for a Modified Ride
While a NASCAR Whelen Modified and Sprint Cup car have practicaly nothing in common, beside having four wheels, Ryan Newman may be making his fellow Cup competitors take notice of his asphalt, open-wheel efforts. In fact, I'm sure there are many drivers in all three of NASCAR's upper divisions(Sprint Cup, Nationwide, and Camping World Truck), who would love to strap into a car from NASCAR'S oldest division, if given the chance. However, the recent performances by Ryan just may be giving them one more reason.
You see, the last two times Ryan Newman has competed in a NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race, he has also won the pole for the Sprint Cup race, as well. This may just be purely coincidental, afterall, Newman is among the best qualifiers in NASCAR. However, you can certainly bet many of the drivers are looking at the connection, to see if there is anything to it.
The last thing I want is for the Modified Series to become like ARCA, Camping World, or Nationwide, where Cup drivers invade and take money away from the teams who compete every weekend. That being said, it would certainly be interesting to see Kyle Busch, or Jimmie Johnson race with the best the division has to offer.
Maybe NASCAR would be more inclined to get the Mods more exposure, if more Cup drivers were involved. And maybe, just maybe, if Ryan Newman wins the Tour race, and then qualifies on the pole, for the Cup race, we will see all the top Sprint Cup teams building a "pavement pounder."
I just have one final thought on the subject. Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick, battling it out in NASCAR Modifieds, enough said.

Don't Forget "Cruise Night" at Wall Stadium This Friday Night
With Hurricane Irene bearing down on us, much of the weekend's race action seems to be in doubt. However, it should still be nice on Friday, and lucky for all of us that is the night of the "Cruise Night" at Wall Stadium.
The car show takes place in the paved pit area of the track, beginning at 5pm. Admission is free to both participants, and spectators. Those displaying cars even get the chance to cruise the high-banked oval on a slow pace lap.
If you have never been, this is a nice relaxed, and inexpensive evening. Sadly, with the weather forecast, it may be your only chance to be outside all weekend.

Hurricane Irene Threatens Great Flemington Speedway Event
An event that I have been looking forward to for weeks, "Race Day at the Fair", which is scheduled for Sunday at the Hunterdon County 4-H & Agriculture Fair, looks like it will fall victim to Hurricane Irene. While vintage and restored race cars will be on display for the duration of the fair, August 24-28, Sunday was scheduled to be a very special day.
The Flemington Speedway Historical Society has a "Most Influential People" ceremony scheduled for Sunday at noon. The initial honoree is Al Tasnady, whose family will be representatives. Immediately following at 1pm is an interview session with many of the former greats of the speedway from both the dirt and asphalt eras.
Drivers scheduled to appear include Stan Ploski Jr., Sammy Beavers, Ken Brenn Jr., Ray Liss, Newt Hartman, Midge Miller, Jimmy Long, Steve Whitt, Phil Cox, Clyde Cox, Nate Strunk, Paul Rochelle Jr., and more. They were to be joined by car owners Ken Brenn Sr., and John Norcia.
There is rarely a week that doesn't go by that I don't think about Flemington Speedway. While my experiences at it as a dirt track were limited, it was one of the best asphalt tracks I have ever been too, and I have been to many, big and small. I sat in the stands, and have been to victory lane for one of the biggest events of that time, the Race of Champions.
I am so appreciative of the Flemington Speedway Historical Society, and all the work they do to make sure "The Square" is not forgotten. I just truly hope, if Hurricane Irene does cancel this event, that it can be rescheduled in the not so distant future.
Stay safe everyone, I need as many readers as I can get!

Danica Patrick Photos from NASCAR GoDaddy Press Conference
The wait is over. Danica Patrick announced what many thought she would all along. She is coming to NASCAR full-time in 2012. She will drive a complete season in the NASCAR Nationwide Series for Dale Earnhardt Jr.' s JR Motorsports team, and a partial schedule in Sprint Cup for Stewart/Haas Racing. She will be sponsored on both efforts by GoDaddy.com.
I thought I would share with you photos from the press conference, below.

NJ Racetracks Should Consider Day Races This Saturday
The biggest nightmare facing racetrack operators is bad weather. They get only a set number of weekends to present their racing programs during the season, and rain can take away many of those nights some years. Luckily, the weather here in New Jersey has been pretty good in 2011, and a majority of the weekends have been run with little or no interruption.
However, it is pretty much a given that a major storm, the remnants of Hurricane Irene, will be visiting us somewhere between Saturday night and Sunday. Most likely, Bridgeport, New Egypt, and Wall Stadium will either see a cancellation, or shortening of their shows if the storm does arrive on Saturday night.
With each race weekend being so valuable to the track operaters, competitors, and fans, why not try starting earlier this Saturday? New Egypt Speedway, earlier this season, moved their program up an entire night, to Friday, in anticipation of bad weather. Although the crowd was sparse, they did manage to get the show in. The last-minute decision, and time of year, is what led to the night being so poorly attended. They just didn't get the word out early enough, and have warm enough weather.
The NJ tracks all know this storm is coming, why not act now? Move the start time for this Saturday's events up to a daytime race program, now. Contact the competitors, and make it a non-points show, to be fair to any who cannot make the earlier time. Get the word out through social media, like Facebook, Twitter, racing blogs, etc. Race fans are a pretty tight, well-connected group, in this state. There aren't many who wouldn't know of the time change if it was done now, on Thursday.
Race promoters have to be reactive as well as proactive. This Saturday is one of those times when a firm, early decision, just may be the difference between a day of the pits and stands being 3/4 full, or a night of no racing at all. No one wants that!

Kyle Busch to be Parked by NASCAR?
I know this is a blog about racing in New Jersey, but since I think most of you were watching tonight's racing from Bristol, I think it is fair to ask a question most of us want the answer to.
Kyle Busch started the night on probation, right?
Kyle Busch purposely wrecked Elliot Sadler tonight, right?
That is obviously a violation of his probation, right?
So Kyle Busch will be suspended by NASCAR, if not this week, but definitely for the next race on the schedule, right?
The sad truth is, probably not. Don't get me wrong I'm not a Kyle Busch hater, I actually think he is the most talented race driver competing, currently, in any series. What upsets me is how meaningless a NASCAR probation actually is. What's next, double probation? If purposely wrecking another competitor on the track, during an event, while on probation, doesn't warrant a suspension, what does? A speeding conviction, where you lose your driver's license on the same day? Oh wait! He did that too!
There will never be a better time for NASCAR to actually flex some muscle. With the current point system, Kyle Busch has already qualified for The Chase. He could be sat down for a week, and really not lose much, position wise. NASCAR could actually use Kyle as an example, and generate significant publicity beyond the sport.
NASCAR could actually be helping Kyle by suspending him. The only thing keeping him from being a champion is Kyle himself. Maybe if he realizes he isn't bigger than the sport, he will learn to use his head more, and his bumper less.
So let's see if NASCAR steps up, or if it's business as usual, meaningless probation.

Vote for Most Popular Driver on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour
Dale Earnhardt Jr., believe it or not, only wins one of NASCAR'S Most Popular Driver awards every year. The NASCAR Sprint Cup one. Although, this is probably the only one many people hear about, the sport actually does give out the award in it's other divisions.
As a blog about New Jersey racing I would give you a link to vote for Martin Truex Jr. in the Sprint Cup, however, we all know that would be fruitless.
There are, however, two NJ drivers who are eligible to win the award in the Modified division, Jimmy Blewett, and Jamie Tomaino. While I feel even Jimmy would tell you he doesn't deserve this award with his part-time status on the Tour, Jamie may be another story.
Jamie Tomaino is not only a past champion of the division, but also among it's most loyal supporters. He attempts to race every event, even though he is significantly underfunded, and simply doesn't have the help many of the other teams have. He is also among it's most well-liked by fellow competitors, and officials. Those same people would probably agree he is definitely worthy of this award among them.
I have included the link below to vote for your favorite. I'm not saying you have to vote for Jamie, but you do get to vote once a day until the deadline, and it would be nice to have a deserving Jerseyan win.

Ryan Newman to Run Bristol Modified Race, But Not in the 7NY
When the number 7NY, owned by "Bono" Manion, and driven by NASCAR Sprint Cup competitor Ryan Newman, was found to be illegal following the Whelan Modified race at New Hampshire, there was much speculation on whether the team and driver would return to race at Bristol. While the 7NY will not be among the cars attempting to qualify for this Wednseday's event, the driver will be.
Ryan Newman will attempt to defend his win of this race one year ago at the wheel of the number 77 Chevrolet owned by Marcy Putnam. The car has competed twice previously this year with Gary Putnam as it's driver. Gary Putnam was actually one of the builders of the 7NY, and is currently an employee of Earnhardt/Ganassi Racing, like Manion. Interestingly, the number 77 car reportedly runs an engine from EGR as well, the same shop that built the illegal engine at New Hampshire.
Newman is looking forward to the opportunity the UNOH Perfect Storm 150 provides him of showing he doesn't need an illegal car to win. It will surely be interesting to see how he does when not at the wheel of the 7NY.
As a note, one driver Newman will not have to beat is Ted Christopher. The third-winningest driver in Tour history has split from car owner Eddie Whelan, and as of yet has not secured a ride for the event.
From a purely NJ point of view, there will be only one driver from the Garden State attempting to make the field at Bristol, Jamie Tomaino. We at Racing Around Jersey wish you luck Jamie.
The race will air at 6pm Wednesday night on the Speed Channel

Racing Around Jersey Reaches 6,000 Views in Less Than 3 Months
I am proud to announce that the Racing Around Jersey blog has exceeded 6,000 views in less than 3 months. While I would love to take credit for all this, there are actually manny to thank.
Among the first I need to thank are Jason Hearne, and Wall Stadium. The controversy generated by this very popular driver's disqualification after his first win, brought many, many views to the blog.
New Egypt Speedway also deserves mention for their many exciting shows, and promotions throughout this 2011 season. Starting with the Cabin Fever Challenge, their decision to beat the weather and race on a Friday night, and the Friends of Mike event, this track knows how to get it done, and they bring me many views.
Billy Pauch has also been big news in NJ racing with his dominant season at New Egypt, and his pursuit of his 100th career victory at the speedway.
Sadly, one of my biggest day of views came from the posting of the pictures of Jamie Wolf's destroyed number 11 Modified, during the Race of Champions weekend at Oswego. Thankfully, driver Rick Kluth was uninjured.
Lastly, I just want to thank all of you who have read my posts. Together, we can get the racers, and tracks of NJ the recognition they deserve. Afterall, it's all about the racing.

New Egypt Tuesday Night Show May Be Only Racing in Jersey This Week
New Jersey race fans may have to get their racing fix early this week. Early weather forecasts are putting this weekend's shows at Bridgeport Speedway, New Egypt, and Wall Stadium in some doubt. Lucky for us New Egypt Speedway is presenting a great night of racing this Tuesday, August 23rd, and the weather is supposed to be great.
The New Egypt Mid-Week Special will feature the ARDC Midgets and the Big-Block Modifieds. As if an extra pay date wasn't enough incentive for the Modifieds to run just three short days after a very rough Saturday night for many of them, the race is also a qualifier for the FMP Short Track Super Nationals.
Spectator gates open at 5pm, with racing scheduled to start at 7:30pm. Adult admission is $22, children(12-15) $10, and kids 11 and under free.
New Egypt Speedway may be our only source for racing action, this week, in New Jersey, if Mother Nature has her way. However, maybe, just maybe, we'll all get lucky and get some good racing weather this weekend, anyway. Afterall, it wouldn't be such a bad thing if we got two race shows in this week would it?

Camping World Truck Series Driver Suspended for Drug Violation
Shane Sieg, a driver in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, has been suspended indefinitely for violation of the substance abuse policy. Sieg has competed in 12 of the 15 races completed on the schedule, so far, in the 2011 season. His last race was at Pocono on August 7th, where he finished 14th.
He becomes the second driver in NASCAR's three major divisions to ever be suspended for violating the substance abuse policy since random drug testing was adopted in 2009. The first was former Ray Evernham driver, Jeremy Mayfield, who continues to battle NASCAR in the courts.
Let's hope Shane Sieg takes this opportunity to get the help he needs, so he can first get his life back, and then maybe his driving career. This is not a death sentence, afterall, the same press release from NASCAR informing of his suspension included news of a crew member, Denise Harmon-Mixon, who has been reinstated following a suspension on July 5th. She completed NASCAR's Road to Recovery Program, and in less than 3 months has returned to the sport.

Young Driver Making His Mark at Wall Stadium
Before the 2011 season started at Wall Stadium, the Blewett Recycling Sportsman division looked to be the most competitive of all the classes on the schedule. There were drivers who had won past championships in the division, and drivers who had also made their mark in the Wall Modifieds in previous years, all looking for a win every Saturday night.
Drivers like Kevin Eyres, a past champion, Robert Sutphin, Joe Mongeau, who had previously run in the Modifieds, and Charlie Kremer III, were all expected to be upfront every week. However, it's a youngster, Eric Mauriello, who has been showing the veterans how it's done most weeks.
Mauriello, not only took home the biggest victory of his young career with his win of this past Saturday's 75-lap event for the Sportsman, but it was also his fourth of the year. The Howell, NJ driver shows a patience not normally displayed in such a young driver. He races his fellow competitors clean, preferring to capitalize on a mistake or an ill-handling race car to pick up a spot. Not an easy trait to display, when on most nights he has only 25-laps to get to the front.
So when talk of contenders for not only a win , but a possible championship, in the Blewett Recycling Sportsman starts up among the fans and competitors at Wall Stadium, there is a driver, who may have been overlooked prior to the start of the season, but certainly cannot be now, Eric Mauriello.
This driver truly seems wise beyond his years, and reminds us all of another great reason to head out to your local short track. To check out a young talent, who races purely for the love of the sport.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. One Bad Race from Not Making The Chase
While there are those in the Hendrick Mototsports camp who would have you believe that Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s performance at Watkins Glen actually put him in a better points position heading to Michigan, a close look at the standings reveal one thing. Dale Jr. is one bad race away from not making The Chase.
He currently sits 9th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup points standings with four races remaining until The Chase begins. While he has won, in the past, at all four tracks upcoming on the schedule, his current performance level doesn't lead to alot of confidence in him maintaining one of those top ten spots, especially when you look at who is fast approaching.
Tony Stewart is currently in tenth, and while this hasn't been one of his better years, so far, he certainly seems to be running much better than Dale Jr. lately. The 11th and 12th place drivers are Clint Bowyer, and Denny Hamlin, respectively. Both are only 40 to 50 points behind Earnhardt, meaning they basically have to outperform him by an average of 10 to 13 positions over the next four events to move past him in the points. Again, with the number 88 National Guard team's performance lately, that scenario does not seem unlikely.
All of the above assumes Dale Jr. doesn't have any bad runs, that he is consistently in the top 15 every week. One DNF would hurt his chances dramatically, as it would those chasing him, however, he is the hunted. It is currently his spot to lose, and sadly, barring a good run at Michigan, he looks to be letting it all slip away.
The biggest story in NASCAR, after the next four events, may just be who didn't make The Chase, rather than who did. Didn't Dale Jr. get the memo from NASCAR? He's supposed to be making headlines for good reasons.

Juan Pablo Montoya's Chances at Watkins Glen Take a Big Hit, Crewmembers Suspended
Watkins Glen usually means a great opportunity for Juan Pablo Montoya to not only run upfront, but challenge for a win. He is always considered among the favorites whenever the NASCAR Sprint Cup cars arrive at the New York road course. His, and his Earnhardt/Ganassi Racing team's chances, however, may have taken a big hit, with a recent announcement from NASCAR.
Two crewmembers, Jerome Frey and Trevor Lysne, have been suspended, indefinitely, by NASCAR for violating the substance abuse policy. Frey was a mechanic, and Lysne was the front tire changer on the number 42 Target Chevrolet.
I say, was, because the two were immediately fired by the team after being arrested in a North Carolina drug sting. The two men accepted a package, delivered by Fedex, containing 10.5 pounds of marijuana addressed to them.
This couldn't come at a worse time for Montoya, as the pitstops at Watkins Glen are actually done in reverse. This is the time when you especially need experienced crewmembers going over the wall.
Events like this make us remember just how much of a team sport NASCAR is. Let's hope two people's stupidity don't cost a whole team a chance at a win this weekend in Watkins Glen.

Wall Stadium to add New Class to Schedule in 2012
This past Saturday night, Wall Stadium officials presented fans, and competitors with an example of a new class of car they plan to have in competition at the Jersey Shore speedway in 2012. The car will be a four cylinder, completely stock vechicle, with the exception of safety equipment.
While I applaud Wall Stadium's management on their efforts to improve the track's future, I have to admit I have several reservations about this step. Firstly, the track already has too many classes in competition on a Saturday night. For a new class to be added would mean the track would have to eliminate at least two of it's current divisions.
Also, these newer cars, when stock, rely heavily on electronics. This opens a HUGE door to potential cheating. Not good at a track that already struggles with it's technical inspections.
I'm sure the intent of this move is to present a class that is more recognizable to the younger race fans they so desperately desire, and the possibility of adding to the money taken in at the pitgate. While both these are valid concerns, the track has much bigger problems to tackle before adding another class.
The racing on most nights at Wall Stadium is good, even despite the low car counts. The problem is there is too much of it, and the facility isn't being promoted well enough. While this is my personal opinion, I did grow up at Wall, and have been both a crewmember in the pits as well as a fan. I have also been to many tracks, both large and small.
Let me know what you think, and don't be negative toward the Wall Stadium management. Afterall, we all want the same thing. For Wall Stadium to be around for many years to come.

Jimmy Blewett Listed as Driver to Watch at New Hampshire by NASCAR Media
There was a time, not long ago, when the combination of Jimmy Blewett and the Dick Barney #14 Modified showing up for an event instantly made them a team you had to contend with for the win. Jimmy was one of the biggest winners, year in and out, in Northeast Modified races. The red #14 car was always a threat to win whether it was Reggie Ruggiero, Ken Woolley, Jimmy, or his late brother John Blewett III, behind the wheel.
Lately, however, the Barneys have chosen to scale back their schedule, although they do provide a Sportsman car at Wall Stadium for young racer Shawna Ingraham, also a red #14. Jimmy, meanwhile, has chosen to concentrate on a new path, dirt racing at New Egypt Speedway.
Both have struggled. The Barneys, with a rookie in a very competitive class at the Jersey Shore speedway. Jimmy, trying to learn how to drive an entirely different type of car, on a totally foreign surface. Although, Jimmy has shown signs of improvement, he is still far from the days of double-digit wins in the asphalt cars.
Jimmy Blewett, and the Barneys, have obviously not lost any respect in the eyes of the NASCAR Media, as they were chosen as one of the teams to watch for this weekend's upcoming NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at New Hampshire. A big part of it has to be his three top-fives in thirteen starts at NHMS, including two runner-ups in 2008 and 2010.
The track was also a favorite of Jimmy's late brother John, who was a four-time track champion at New Hampshire in his tragically short career. With the four year anniversary of JBIII's passing as a result of a racing accident at Thompson International Speedway approaching on August 16th, a win would be truly special for Jimmy, and the rest of the Blewett family.
The other drivers listed as ones to watch include, Eric Beers, Ted Christopher, Todd Szegedy, and Donny Lia, who just recently returned to the Tour.
There will also be a very special event honoring the memory of John Blewett III this Sunday at Woody's Roadside Tavern in Farmingdale, NJ. For more details, click the link below to my post on NJ.com regarding the event.

Billy Pauch Will Probably Win the Demo Derby at New Egypt Too !
Billy Pauch as been nothing but dominant, this year, at New Egypt Speedway. When he captured his 100th career win at the track, last week, it must have seemed like his 100th win of the season to his fellow competitors. In fact, it is more news when the Frenchtown, NJ driver doesn't win, than when he does.
What is truly amazing is the difference among the fans of New Egypt, and those who seem to only follow NASCAR. While Jimmy Johnson should be respected for his five consecutive Sprint Cup championships, he, more often than not, is met with criticism, and a feeling of somehow he is hurting the sport.
The feeling about Pauch, at New Egypt, is quite the opposite. Despite seemingly winning every week, he is met with the applause of most of the fans on hand when he exits the Ling Trucking number one in victory lane. The fans don't think he is stinking up the show. Rather, they look forward to him powering his way to the front of the field, and seeing whether this is the week someone finally holds off the dirt track legend.
I may be biased, but maybe the fans of short track racing just appreciate driving talents when they see them, more so, than the NASCAR fan who has never been to his or her local track.
Whatever it is, I think what Pauch is doing, at New Egypt, is nothing short of amazing. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he won the demolition derby at the track this weekend. He is certainly living up to the number one on his door!

Great Photos From GSVSCC Action
I love the seeing the race cars of my youth, either when they make an appearance at one of our NJ racetracks, or the neighborhood car show. I don't consider myself old, but, I have to admit I do remember seeing not only the Ford Pinto and Gremlins compete, but also the coupes.
I wasn't able to make it out to Wall Stadium for the latest appearance of the Garden State Vintage Stock Car Club, so I was very happy to find some pictures from their night on the Wall Stadium website. While I wish there were more, the one of the two modifieds, side-by-side, charging on the frontstretch is worthy of being a poster.
Check them out yourself at http://www.wallspeedway.com/
Plus they have a link to my NJ.com posts, so that's another reason to visit !

Carl Edwards Decision Is In !
After much speculation, and some obviously wrong reports, ESPN is reporting that Sprint Cup driver Carl Edwards has made his decision on where, and for who, he will drive in 2012 and beyond. In what may be a surprise to many Edwards has decided to remain with Roush Racing.
It had been reported, not only that Joe Gibbs Racing had been trying to sign the Aflac driver, but that they indeed had, to replace Joey Logano in the Home Depot number 20 Toyota.
Details were not yet available, but it had been reported that Ford Motor Company had actually agreed to pay Edwards a $10 million signing bonus to keep him in a Ford. No word yet on a sponsor.

Pocono Gives Fans a Chance to Meet Two Incredible NJ Residents
Pocono Speedway, this weekend, will bring the opportunity for many New Jersey residents to get to see their NASCAR Sprint Cup heroes compete on a track close to home. While many will make the trip looking to cheer on drivers like Dale Earnhardt Jr., Carl Edwards, or even home-state favorite Martin Truex Jr., two NJ race fans will be at the Pennsylvania track looking to continue their charitable work that has garnered them recognition from NASCAR, itself.
Patty Aber, and Gerry Clauss, will be working a booth for the NASCAR Foundation somewhere near the many trailers, just outside the grandstands, selling every type of NASCAR collectible imagineable. While they won't be hawking the latest Paul Menard Brickyard 400 win shirt, they will be selling something that will cost you far less, but will make you feel so much better than any shirt ever could.
Patty and Gerry will be selling NASCAR Unites wristbands for $5, of which every penny goes to support various children's charities, and NASCAR Day pins for $10, of which all the money donated goes to the Victory Junction Gang Camp. The wristbands allow you to show your pride of being a NASCAR fan, and support many great causes. The pins, are very limited, so get over to see Patty and Gerry early, pick one up, and help send a kid to camp.
I got the chance to talk to both Patty and Gerry when I interviewed them for a post on NJ.com. They are both special people who put the needs of children before their own enjoyment. While both are race fans, they choose to spend their time at the NASCAR Foundation booth looking to raise money for charity, rather than head up into the grandstands and enjoy the race.
So if you are headed out to Pocono this weekend, make sure you search out these two great people. Just meeting them will make your race weekend that much more enjoyable, and pick up a wristband, or pin, or both. Then head up to the grandstands and enjoy the race knowing you have done something to help a kid somewhere. It may be the best Pocono weekend you have ever had.
I have included a link to my NJ.com post on Patty and Gerry. Check it out, I'm sure you will come away as impressed with them as I did, and you will definitely want to meet these two special individuals.

Another DQ at Wall Stadium, What's Going On at the Jersey Shore Speedway?
Wall Stadium announced another disqualification Monday. This time it was Factory Stock driver, Jim Downey, who was flagged the winner of the first of two feature events for the division, this past Saturday. The win was then awarded to Shannon Mongeau, who had followed Downey across the line.
While all racetracks have problems, from time to time, with cars being found to be illegal, the problem seems to be excessive at Wall Stadium. The most well-known issue involved the disqualification of Jason Hearne, son of Wall legend Gil, after a Wall Modified win earlier this season.
The Hearne disqualification got the most coverage since it came in the track's headline division, and was a very popular win among the fans. However, there have been other disqualifications in the lower divisions throughout the year that haven't attracted as much attention.
When it comes to competition, there will always be those who try to bend, if not flat out break, the rules. However, I have had the priviledge of working side-by-side with many of the competitors at Wall Stadium, as a crewmember, myself, in the past, and know 99.9% of them try very hard to abide by the rules. They know how hard a win is to come by, and don't want any chance of having it taken away.
They also compete with their friends, and family. People they don't just see at the track. People they see while working, at the local deli, or local bar. The last thing they want is a bad name among people they interact with often.
The only conclusion I can draw is there must be a problem of some sort at the speedway itself. I am not blaming Cliff Krause, and his staff. They are doing their best at trying to keep the Jersey Shore speedway running. I don't think it is anything intentional. More likely, is a misunderstanding of the rules by officials, competitors, or both.
However, it is the track's responsibility to make sure disqualifications don't continue to happen. Fans hate leaving the speedway thinking one person won, only to find out later that wasn't the case due to a disqualification. For a track struggling to attract fans, the last thing they need is to is to add any negativity to a fan's experience, especially when it can be avoided.
There should never be a disqualification for weight at any racetrack. The track has scales. Every car should be required to go over the scales every time it goes onto the track, if it's legal going on it shouldn't have to be reweighed unless it came to the pits during the race.
The situation with Hearne, was for a rearend violation. A part that is out in the open, on a car in the track's headline division. A division which usually has a car count of about 15 Modifieds. This is inexcusable, if any division should be watched closely, it's the track's headline division.
Disqualifications don't benefit anyone. Let's hope Wall Stadium can get a handle on this situation soon. The track, currently, has some pretty low car counts in it's divisions. If this problem can't be solved now, it will only get worse should the track improve it's car counts in the future.
Again, this is all most likely a result of miscommunication. Everyone involved only wants to see the track prosper and grow. However, the leaders of Wall Stadium need to make sure this doesn't become the norm instead of the exception.

I Was Praising Paul Menard in March, But Who Knew?
I have always counted myself among the minority of those who felt Paul Menard was a talented race car driver, not just someone who's dad's money bought him rides. I'm not naive, I know it may be more important these days to bring sponsorship money with you than to be talented. There are many talented drivers sitting on the sidelines, deserving of quality rides, who since their family isn't rich never get the chance.
While there is no doubt the Menards money has helped Paul in his career, there should now be no doubt either that the man can drive a race car. He did a masterful job of saving fuel, and not panicking in the closing laps, like what may have happened in the final turn of the Indy 500.
I actually wrote a piece for Yahoo, back in March, in which I called him the best driver at Richard Childress Racing, at that time. He may actually, at this time, only trail Kevin Harvick, in talent, at the team now. He is, afterall, performing better than Clint Bowyer, and Jeff Burton, in the same equipment.
Congrats, Paul I knew you could win on this level, but even I never thought it would be at Indy.
